Our History

Luna County: Where Our Culturally Rich And Historic Past Guides Our Diverse And Thriving Future

Nestled in the sun-soaked southwest corner of New Mexico, Deming is a hidden gem rich in heritage and natural beauty. With a high-desert climate framed by the striking Florida Mountains, this region offers blue skies, friendly faces, and activities for every season.
Deming’s roots run deep. It played a pivotal role in the shaping of the American West—from the driving of the Silver Spike in 1881 that completed the country’s second transcontinental railroad, to its presence along the storied Butterfield Stage Trail. The town’s military legacy also looms large, having served as a training ground for World War I troops at Camp Cody and for bombardiers during World War II at the Deming Army Air Base.
Today, Deming continues to celebrate its colorful past while thriving as a business and agricultural hub. Home to the world's largest chile processing plant, this “Chile Capital” serves up more than just spicy flavors—it offers genuine western hospitality.
Deming is also a haven for rockhounds, history buffs, and outdoor enthusiasts. From the intricate artistry of ancient Mimbres pottery—showcased at the Deming Luna Mimbres Museum—to the rugged beauty of nearby state parks, there’s something here for every adventurer. Explore Spring Canyon and Rockhound State Parks, set in the dramatic Florida Mountains, where camping, hiking, and treasure-hunting for semi-precious stones await.
The story of this land dates back nearly a thousand years, to when the Mimbres people settled along the Mimbres River. Their influence is still felt in the culture and spirit of Deming today. By the early 1800s, American settlers began arriving, though the early days were rough—so much so that outlaws in Arizona were once sent here on one-way tickets.
But times have changed. What was once a tough frontier town is now a vibrant community with wide-open skies and endless opportunities. Whether you're planning a short visit or looking for a place to call home, Deming welcomes you with warmth, wonder, and a timeless connection to the Old West.

What Our Clients Are Saying

"Keep Luna County Beautiful absolutely loves the Chamber of Commerce for being a powerhouse of community pride and partnership."   -Heather Lutz, Keep Luna County Beautiful

"I think the chamber does an outstanding job..."    -Bill Dupree, owner of Busy Bee Septic

"I love working with the chamber. Their executive director, Tarcia, is amazing and a pleasure to work with."  -Stacey Jones, manager of Lazy Lizard Bar and Grill.

"The Chamber reaching out to me directly, before I had a chance to contact them for assistance, speaks volumes. They were greatly concerned about getting my business hours out there and advertising from day one of opening my business. The chamber was definitely my first out reach to the community. I am forever grateful."
-Sandy Milo, owner of Souper Salad Buffet
